The temple’s name, zhen ru, is the Chinese translation of a Buddhist philosophy term “Tathata”, or Suchness. First built during the late-Song dynasty, and completed during Yuan Dynasty in year 1320, the temple is one of the only three Yuan-style architectures in the Jiangnan region. Main features include the Grand Shrine Hall and its16 big wooden pillars, the Hall of Perfect Penetration with a 5.2-meter, four-sided stone statue of Bodhisattva, an 800-year-old Gingko tree, and the Zhenru Pagoda, which has an underground palace honoring the relics of the Buddha.
