About

Hong Kong-based composer Fung Lam and renowned photographer Wing Shya are teaming up for Nocturnes, a one-of-a-kind live performance blending music and cinematic art. Experience a poetic journey of music performed by Fung Lam on piano, saxophonist Timothy Sun, and other musicians, while Shya’s visual art creates an atmospheric experience.

Nocturnes

An artistic collaboration between renowned composer Fung Lam and internationally acclaimed photographer and director Wing Shya, Nocturnes is a journey through music and cinematic art. Premiering in Hong Kong in 2022, this cross-media performance will be staged at Shanghai's Theatre YOUNG on March 22nd and 23rd, 2025. Featuring Fung Lam on piano and a live ensemble, the performance explores the intimate relationship between the self and the city, blending music and visual art. Wing Shya’s first cinematic creation for the stage, the performance evokes a serene, dreamlike atmosphere that draws the audience into a poetic space.

A Dialogue Between Music and Cinematic Art
Fung Lam translates his feelings about the night into music, which Wing Shya interprets through a cinematic art movie. For the first time, Shya brings his visual artistry to a stage setting, presenting the dreamy imagery of nightfall. Lam and his ensemble, including saxophonist Timothy Sun, perform the pieces live, creating an immersive experience that invites the audience to let their imagination soar. Twelve young actresses and models, including Natalie Hsu, Kuku So, Helen So, and Elizabeth Tang, feature in Shya’s art film, stirring emotions through their performances.

Exploring the Relationship Between Oneself and the City
Fung Lam, born in Hong Kong in 1979, is an internationally recognized composer who has performed in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and Royal Albert Hall. Lam has composed works for dance, theatre, sound installations, and multimedia projects. He was the Composer-in-Residence with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Wing Shya, a celebrated photographer and director, is best known for his collaborations with Hong Kong’s top artists and his work with Wong Kar Wai’s films.
